Since May of 2010 the MC-12W ‘Liberty’ has contributed to Operation Enduring Freedom with its real-time Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) role. The aircraft is used to keep a watchful eye over convoys as wells as helping members on the ground to navigate their way to various targets, the MC-12 also has the capability to give terminal guidance for laser guided bombs that are dropped from fighter aircraft such as the F-15E Strike Eagle or the F-16 Fighting Falcon. But now all of the 361st Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron (ERS)’s MC-12W’s have returned to Beale AFB, California after the 361st ERS was deactivated on September 1st 2014 at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. The 4th ERS based at Bagram Air Force Base, Afghanistan is predicted to be handing over their MC-12 operations to the US Army on October 1st 2014.
